Notes from Nancy
Wayne State University President Jay Noren is planning a second trade mission to Israel in June in time for the ILSI-Biomed 2010 in Tel-Aviv. The goal:to engage academic, research and business partnerships. I will be going along to meet with companies, and incubators interested in making their U.S. market entry with the assistance of TechTown’s Soft Landings.
As you may have heard, we are building a Stem Cell Commercialization Center at TechTown. We plan to meet with Israeli companies who have expressed an interest in being part of the Stem Cell Commercialization Center. For those of you who may not be familiar with Soft Landings at TechTown, let me tell you about Soft Landings. The Soft Landings Center helps second stage and mature companies establish their business infrastructure quickly in the U.S. How do we do this you ask? We provide access to market research, marketing and media exposure, translation services, legal and accounting consultations, assistance with visa and immigration matters (and that’s the easy stuff!). Through our industry network, academic partnerships (Wayne State, Michigan State and University of Michigan), and governmental contacts, we provide customized connections and introductions for incoming companies depending on the resources they request.
We have developed specialized toolkits depending on your industry. For example, we have developed a toolkit for the Life Sciences and Engineering Technology companies. Some of these fee-for-services can be accessed through Wayne State University resources such as the Smart Sensors and Integrated Microsystems labs, and the Applied Genomics Technology Center. The Smart Sensors and Integrated Microsystems (SSIM) labs, through the School of Engineering are developing novel materials, protocol and prototype devices across a number of applications including biomedical, energy and environmental and automotive, aerospace and communications. Check out the fascinating work of Dr. Greg Auner, Dr. Pepe Siy and Dr. Ratna Naik, in areas of materials and device physics, materials science, prototype development, and VLSI Integration and
Applied Genomics Technology Center (AGTC) is a state-of-the-art, fee-for-service genomics center that provides a wide range of genomic technologies to the medical research and global biotech company community. In addition to instrumentation, AGTC personnel are available to work with investigators. These personnel are highly experienced in a wide variety of genomics technologies. AGTC welcomes to encourage collaborative relationships with genomics researchers, and biotechnology companies. Susan J. Land, Ph.D directs the lab, which is known for top quality and service.
