“Tech Town is an untapped organization here in the city,” Detroit City Councilman James Tate said recently as he and his staff toured the TechTown campus.
Tate’s visit included a tour of TechTown’s recently commissioned American Beauty Iron mural and a meeting with four of the artists who guided 31 Detroit school children in creating and painting the individual panels that now wrap around the historic building at Cass and Burroughs. ‘The mural give a sense of hope to an area that was once desolate. It was good to meet some of the artists and to see the young people getting involved to transform the area. I look forward to the future. ”
Tate’s visit underscores TechTown’s growing partnership with the City of Detroit. The incubator was recently named an Innovation Zone, a designation which will exempt TechTown’s flagship building TechOne from real estate and personal property taxes. The exemption period last 20 years and is subject to review every five years.
