A competition about the future of Southeast Michigan

The Accelerate Michigan Innovation Competition is open to anyone currently in the state or from anywhere in the world willing to relocate to Michigan. There are more than $1 million in prizes for various categories including one for students at Michigan colleges and universities, but this competition has something I believe is unique--a special category for seniors called the Encore prize worth $25,000. I suspect there will be some very strong entries from folks over 55.

The Makers who can help remake a city

Behind the weird and the wonderful at the Maker Faire last weekend was hidden a more serious intent. This two-day fair is part of a movement that began in California a few years ago and is now spreading around the U.S. and the world. The Henry Ford Museum, which is home to the makers and tinkerers of the 20th century like Henry Ford and Thomas Edison, was the perfect venue to launch a 21st century makers movement in Detroit. George Moroz and the other leaders at the museum are attempting to reignite the passion for invention, innovation, design and making new things. Last week’s event demonstrates that the interest and excitement exist. Now the trick is to turn a weekend of the weird and wonderful into a seven-day-a-week, year-long effort to create real things that create real jobs.

Canadians solve job creation on stage and off

Canada and Canadians have considerably more than great acting and ice hockey to offer the world. Maybe it's time to recognize that Canadians know a thing or two about economic development. Canada has added over 227,000 jobs in the past three months, all but replacing jobs lost during the 2008-2009 recession.

Detroit has no choice but to replan the city. Maybe Detroit’s city planners should take a trip to Savannah. Savannah, like Detroit was a facing a crisis. So planners created a series of small green squares and made houses close by attractive to buy. How Detroit goes about the process could be seen as good or evil.
